Why it matters

The easiest way to get your NIF

As someone relocating to Portugal, you will need a NIF (número de identificação fiscal), your taxpayer number in Portugal. It is required for many processes, such as opening a bank account, renting accommodation, getting a phone subscription, working in Portugal, and the list goes on. Smart Relocation makes it easy with Frontr, our self-service platform to get your NIF remotely, without ever visiting Portugal.

Save time

You can expect your NIF within 5-7 business days of your signed Power of Attorney.

Signature recognition

Your Power of Attorney is granted to a licensed lawyer, which Portuguese law exempts from notarization. No apostille needed.

Easy process

Just a few steps to go through, entirely online.

Frequently asked questions

What is a NIF and why do I need one?

The NIF (Número de Identificação Fiscal), also called número de contribuinte, is your Portuguese taxpayer number. You need it for almost anything official in Portugal: opening a bank account, signing a lease, buying property, getting a phone plan, or starting a visa application.

Can I request a NIF if I have never been to Portugal?

Yes. Our process is built specifically for people applying from abroad, with no Portuguese address and no prior residency.

Do I need to visit a notary or get an apostille?

No. Your power of attorney is granted to a licensed lawyer, which Portuguese law exempts from notarization, so no apostille is needed either. Simply sign it, scan it, and upload it, and our team submits the request to Finanças on your behalf.

What documents do I need?

A valid passport (or national ID card for EU citizens) and a proof of address issued outside Portugal, such as a utility bill or bank statement.

What proof of address is accepted?

A driving licence (front and back, not expired), the first page of a bank statement, or a utility bill (electricity, water, mobile, internet, or cable). It needs to show your full name and address, and be dated within the last 3 months.

How long does it take to receive my NIF?

Once your signed power of attorney and documents are received, we submit your request to Finanças. The official NIF is typically issued within 5-7 business days.

How far in advance should I start the process?

If you are applying for a residence visa, you will need both a NIF and a Portuguese bank account, and you will need the NIF first since the bank account process cannot start without it. We recommend starting your NIF at least 2 months before your visa appointment, to leave enough time for both.

Can I get a NIF number for my child using the same process?

Yes, of course. If your child is under 18 years old, both parents will normally need to sign the Power of Attorney, and you will also need to provide the child's birth certificate. If only one parent is available, we also accept a single-parent application with proof of sole custody or the other parent's death certificate.

Can I apply for my whole family at once?

Yes. If you are applying together with a spouse, partner, or children, you can submit them all in a single order. Each person gets their own document checklist and progress tracker.

Do I need a fiscal representative?

No, not to get your NIF. It only becomes relevant later, if you create specific tax ties to Portugal, such as owning property there, and even then most nationalities can opt into electronic notifications instead of appointing one. The one case where it is strictly required is running a self-employed activity in Portugal while you are not yet a tax resident there. We offer fiscal representation as an optional add-on at €100/year. Contact us if this applies to you.

Does getting a NIF mean I have to pay taxes in Portugal?

No. A NIF is just an identification number, it does not make you a tax resident or create any filing obligations on its own. Tax residency depends on separate criteria, like how many days you spend in Portugal each year.

Does my NIF expire?

No, once issued your NIF is permanent. Details like your address or fiscal representative can be updated later if they change.

What if Finanças finds an issue with my documents?

Finanças does not reject whole applications, only individual documents. Our team reviews everything before it is ever submitted, and if something needs fixing, you are told exactly what and given the chance to correct it first.
