Portugal Digital Nomads Residence (D8) Visa

Portugal recently introduced a highly anticipated visa for remote workers! Now, individuals working remotely for companies outside Portugal, those who own their own businesses and can work remotely, as well as freelancers, can apply for a residence visa to legally live in Portugal. This new visa modality opens the door for a variety of professionals to enjoy the benefits of living in Portugal while continuing their remote work activities.

What's the benefits of the D8 visa?

Right
 

Visa holders gain the right to live, work, and/or study in Portugal, with access to the country's public services such as education and healthcare.

Travel
 

Enjoy visa-free travel across the Schengen Area, allowing unrestricted movement within 26 European countries.

Open a business
 

The visa allows you to work as a freelancer or start a business in Portugal, benefiting from its growing economy and favorable business environment.

Bring your family
 

The visa allows you to bring your family members, including dependent children and parents, under the "family reunification" provision, offering them the same rights and benefits.

N.H.R.
 

Visa holders can apply for the NHR tax regime, providing significant tax advantages, including exemptions on foreign income for a period of 10 years.

Permanent residency / Citizenship

After five years, visa holders can apply for permanent residency or Portuguese citizenship, granting full EU rights, including free movement and work across the EU.

All you need to know

Incomes:

  • Proof of average monthly income earned in the exercise of subordinate or independent professional activity in the last three months of a minimum value equivalent to four guaranteed minimum monthly remunerations (€3040):

We need to highlight that, even if you have the minimum, the request can be denied. 

So we recommend showing more than the minimum.

Documents:

  • If you’re working under contract: 

(i) present the employment contract; 

(ii) a statement from the employer proving the link with the company;

(iii) a statement from the employer proving you are allowed to work remotely;

  • If you are a freelancer/business owner, you must present: 

(i) company incorporation agreement; 

(ii) service provision agreement; 

(iii) document proving the provision of services to one or more entities; 

  • Document proving tax residency outside Portugal (Last tax return); 
  • Travel insurance; 
  • Visa application form; 
  • Request for consultation of the Portuguese criminal record by AIMA; 
  • Criminal record certificate from the country of origin or from the country where the applicant has resided for more than one year (with Apostille);
  • Proof of accommodation;
